Daryl is a European Patent Attorney, Chartered UK Patent Attorney, and European Design Attorney in the High Tech and Electrical Group.
Daryl focuses on patent drafting, prosecution, and oppositions in the physics, mechanical, medical device, and electrical fields. He also provides general patent portfolio advice, including freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses.
Daryl has extensive experience practising before both the European Patent Office (EPO), the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and using the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) international patent application system. Daryl also handles offensive and defensive post-grant oppositions at the EPO, including high-value cases for multinational clients. In addition to working on patent matters, Daryl also files European Community registered design applications at the EUIPO and registered design applications at the UKIPO.
Daryl’s technical experience covers the aerospace industry; medical devices*; internet, computing, and technology services; mobile devices and telecommunications networks; video encoding; optical devices and optical fibre-based sensors; display technology; fuel cells; cooling systems; imaging instrumentation; mass spectrometry; electron spectroscopy; premium connections in oil and gas applications; combustion analysis; business methods; and financial applications. Daryl is experienced with computer-implemented inventions and regularly provides advice on the viability of such inventions at the EPO and UKIPO, especially at the initial drafting stage or pre-filing in Europe.
*In the medical device field, Daryl particularly enjoys working on a range of subject matter, including heart valves, drug infusion devices, coronary stents and delivery devices, auto-injector pens, clinical diagnostics systems for blood sampling and data analysis, tissue ablation instruments, lung-retensioning systems, and diabetes-monitoring devices.
Daryl also has experience of collaborating with litigation teams on national court proceedings, in particular in the UK and Germany, and looks forward to this expanding to the Unified Patent Court (UPC), which is expected to open soon.
Daryl has an MPhys, Physics, from the University of Oxford. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and a member of the Institute of Physics.
